How Can I Help a Family Member Immigrate?
Each year the government of the United States of America issues 480,000 family-based visas. Your status determines which relatives (or future relatives) may be eligible to receive immigration benefits. In order to help a family member immigrate, you must be a:
- U.S. Citizen
- Green Card holder (permanent resident)
- Refugee admitted as a refugee within the past 2 years or asylee granted asylum within the past 2 years.
Who Can a U.S. Citizen Sponsor?
If you are a United States Citizen you may petition for the following family relatives to receive a Green Card (permanent residence):
- Your Husband or Wife
- Your Unmarried Children Under 21 Years Old
- Your Unmarried Son or Daughter Over 21 Years Old
- Your Married Son or Daughter Over 21 Years Old
- Your Parent If You Are Over 21 Years Old
- Your Siblings (Brothers/Sisters) If You Are Over 21 Years Old
- Your Fiancé (read below)
Fiancé Visa
If you are a United States Citizen, you may petition for a fiancé who is residing outside of the United States and for children of your fiancé who are under the age of 21.

Who Can a Green Card Holder (Permanent Resident) Sponsor?
If you are a Green Card Holder (Permanent Resident) you may petition for the following relatives:
- Husband or Wife
- Unmarried Child Under 21 Years Old
- Unmarried son or daughter of any age
